What Is the Recruitment Process for DLA Piper?

Online Application

You must complete an online application form to show the hiring team at DLA Piper that you are interested in their firm. This form will ask basic pre-employment questions such as your educational background, employment history, and motivations for applying to the firm.

You’ll also have a chance to upload a current CV that details recent projects you’ve worked on, relevant skills you have, and other qualifications for the position. It is important to note that you cannot upload a cover letter with your application. Therefore, you must fit all relevant information on your CV.

You will also answer a commercial awareness question. The hiring team wants to know that you stay up-to-date on recent developments in the industry and the aims of DLA Piper.

Watson Glaser Critical Thinking Test

After you complete your online application, you will complete an online aptitude exam. The Watson Glaser Critical Thinking Test will test several skills and abilities required of those in the legal profession. The test will cover five topic areas:

  • Making correct inferences
  • Making deductions
  • Recognizing assumptions
  • Coming to conclusions
  • Evaluating arguments

How you do on this exam will show the hiring team how qualified you are for the position. Therefore, it is essential to receive a high score on this exam.

Phone Interview

Candidates who pass the initial application screening and do well on the critical-thinking assessment will complete a phone interview. This stage of the process is for the hiring team to learn more about you, your qualifications for the position, and why you are interested in the role.

They will likely ask questions about your past experiences, so be sure to have a copy of your CV close by during the interview. Since they are interested in your motivations behind applying, you should also research the company to point to specific examples of what you like about the firm and why you would rather work there than another firm.

Assessment Day

The final stage of the recruitment process is assessment day. This day-long event is an excellent chance for you to showcase your skills and personality to the hiring team. You will gather with several other candidates to complete three activities:

Group Exercise

During the group exercise, you and your group members will receive information that you will have 15 minutes to review. This will likely be a case study or include a business-related issue you must solve. Your group will then have 40 minutes to discuss the problem and develop a solution or argument for the case.

During this exercise, the hiring team is most interested in your collaboration and teamwork skills. Be sure to express your thoughts if you have something of value to contribute, but it is equally important to let others talk and voice their opinions.

Analysis Presentation

The analysis presentation is an individual exercise where you will receive an hour to read and analyze a packet of information about a fictional company. You must then develop and present a future strategy based on the information.

This exercise tests your commercial understanding, communication, and business skills. You will have ten minutes to present your position and will need to prepare for five minutes of further discussion.

Partner Interview

The last activity will be the partner interview. This discussion will focus on your experiences, qualifications, and achievements. This is your last chance to show the firm that you bring a unique perspective to the table and that you’d bring value to the company. Use this time to highlight your skills using examples and details.

How to Prepare for the DLA Piper Assessment?

DLA Piper is looking for qualified and passionate individuals to join their team of legal professionals. One way to show the team you are qualified is to do well on the critical thinking assessment. Because this exam is so early in the hiring process, you must receive a high score to be considered for the position.

Candidates who take the time to prepare for the exam using online resources such as practice tests are more likely to receive a high score on the exam. Practice tests will provide sample questions along with answer solutions to give you a better idea of what is on the exam and how to approach answering those questions. Working through practice exams will boost your confidence and give you all of the information you need to do well on the exam.
