Germany based discount grocer Lidl operates 10,000 stores with a presence in 30 countries. They are currently located in every country in the European Union and have recently expanded to the East Coast of the United States with 65 stores. Lidl has plans to increase its U.S presence, and there are currently distribution centers located in North Carolina, New Jersey, and Virginia. There are opportunities for internships, and positions for recent college graduates. What Is Lidl’s Hiring Process?

Application

The Lidl hiring process starts with an online application. You can search for jobs by looking for the position and location you are interested in, or by scrolling through the open positions. The website is updated daily. The application will have questions about relevant experience, your interests, and anything else you feel is important. When you apply you can upload a cover letter along with your CV and resume. A cover letter is strongly recommended to add context to your resume, and it gives you an opportunity to explain why you would be the perfect fit for the job and make your application stand out. When your application is received you will be sent an email notifying you. If you are selected to continue to the next step you will be notified within 28 days of submitting your application.

Lidl Online Aptitude Tests

Lidl requires several assessment tests as part of their hiring process.  Successfully passing their assessment tests is required to move on to the next stage of the hiring process. The tests job-seekers need to be prepared for are:

  • SHL numerical reasoning test This is a timed test designed to see how well you can read and interpret numerical data presented in charts and word problems. You will have about 20 minutes to complete this portion, and you will not be allowed to use a calculator.
  • Situational judgment testThis is a psychometric test used to determine how well the job candidate will perform in situations that commonly occur in the workplace. This section is multiple choice, you will need to suggest the best answer from the options given. Your response will be measured against the attributes Lidl is looking for in their employees.
  • Verbal Test This test will measure your comprehension of written language, your understanding of verbal cues, and your ability to make logical conclusions from written or verbal information. This test is multiple-choice.

Lidl Interviews

If you pass the assessment tests there are several steps in the interview process. The first interview for graduate candidates is a group interview. There will be a presentation about the company and job candidates will have an opportunity to ask questions. This interview is a chance for management to get to know you and see how you will fit into the company. Experienced candidates will have a face to face interview. This interview will focus on experience and they may have you do some role-playing. Candidates who pass the first interview will be asked back for a face to face interview with management. This interview is about 40 minutes long. They will ask questions about your motivations for working with Lidl, past job experience, and competency. Some questions you should anticipate are:

  • Why are you interested in working for Lidl?
  • What is the largest amount of people you’ve managed?
  • What skills do you bring to the table, and how do they make you an asset to Lidl?
  • What experience do you hope to gain from working for Lidl?
  • Have you ever given criticism to your employer? How would you handle it?

Work Trial

Candidates for positions such as Deputy Store Manager will be asked to attend a work trial. You will be invited to a store so you can be observed performing the role.  Treat the work trial like your first day on the job. They will want to see you interacting with store employees and customers, and seeing how well you actually handle the job.

Lidl Assessment Centre

The majority of the Lidl hiring process will occur at an assessment centre. If your application is accepted, a recruiter will call and schedule this with you. Be sure to bring your CV or resume with you to clarify any questions. At the assessment center be ready to:

  • A presentation about the company their corporate values, and employee benefits.
  • First-round interviews. Group interviews for graduate placement, and face to face for experienced applicants.
  • The online assessment tests.
  • Second interview

 

How to Prepare for Lidl’s Assessments?

Practice is crucial when preparing for the Lidl assessment tests. Since you are not allowed a calculator for the numerical assessment, it is important that you are comfortable enough with your math skills to stay calm. The test is timed, but the focus should be on accuracy.  Do not guess just to answer all the questions. If you find yourself stuck, simply move to the next question. If you feel uncertain of your math skills take the time to go back and review the areas you feel weak in before taking the test. When taking the situational judgment test thoroughly read the question and the answers. Many of the answers are very similar, but they will be looking for the response that best reflects their company values and customer service expectations. Approaching the tests calmly, and thoroughly reading the directions will help you make it all the way through the hiring process.
