What Is State Street’s Hiring Process?

State Street is looking to hire people from diverse backgrounds who will bring a variety of perspectives to the company.  People have reported the hiring process to take from 5 days to 5 weeks.

Application Process

The application process begins with an online application.  Be sure to fill out the entire application.  You can save your work and return to the application later if you run out of time.  You will be able to choose the positions that interest you, and the locations you are willing to work.

Phone Interview

When your application comes up in a hiring search, you will be contacted by an HR representative.  During this interview, you will be asked to answer questions about your background and skills you have that are relevant to the position.  You will want to schedule this interview for a time when you can be in a quiet place, free from interruptions.

State Street Assessments

Depending on the position for which you are applying, you may be asked to take some assessments.  It is common for large companies to ask applicants to take a psychometric test. The tests include assessments of abstract, verbal, and numerical reasoning.  A psychometric assessment gives the company information about your personality and cognitive abilities so HR can determine if you are a suitable candidate for the position.

In-Person Interview

You may be asked to interview with multiple people, even at multiple times.  In addition to your skills and experience, the interviewers will be looking to see if you are a good fit for the team for which they are hiring.

State Street Interview Tips

Keep your resume current.  You may want to bring a copy of your resume to the interview so the interviewer can easily refer to it.  You will want to have all of your skills and experiences up to date.  Reviewing your resume frequently, and keeping it update, keeps your experience fresh in your mind so you can easily recall examples of past experiences during the interview process.

  • Review the job description.  Going into the interview knowing exactly what you bring to the table will give you confidence.  Be ready to share exactly how and why you are the best candidate for the position.
  • Know your strengths.  Have confidence in yourself and be ready to share your strengths with examples to back up your statements.
  • Research State Street.  Let the company know you are interested in them.  Do your research so you can ask meaningful questions, and give compliments on their successes and statistics.
  • Ask questions.  The interview is also a time for you to get to know more about State Street and about what the company can offer you.  Feel free to ask team members about their culture and working environment.  You can also ask questions to determine their technical and/or financial expertise, as appropriate.  This is the time to ask any questions you may have about benefits, salary, and start dates.

How to Prepare for the State Street Assessment?

The best way to prepare for psychometric testing is to take a lot of practice tests.  Taking practice tests gives you a feel for the assessment and the types of questions you will encounter.  Being prepared eases anxiety and enables you to confidently put forth your best effort.

These aptitude tests include portions on abstract, verbal, and numerical reasoning.

  • Abstract Reasoning – This portion measures your ability to identify patterns, logical rules, and trends in data. It also measures how you use this information to solve problems.
  • Verbal Reasoning – This assessment measures your ability to understand and work with concepts and problems expressed in words. Be sure to answer questions based solely on the information given in the text, and not on past experiences, or on assumptions.
  • Numerical Reasoning – This portion of the assessment measures your understanding of numerical information and your ability to use the appropriate operation(s) to solve the problem.

In both the interview, and the assessment, the key is to be prepared.  Taking multiple assessments is a great way to prepare for the assessment and to come out with a strong score that will put you in a positive light before you even go into the personal interview.
